Internal Newsletter – Letter from Founders

March 3, 2021

Hello Board Members and Advisory Team of Home of My Own of WNY.

We are excited to share the progress we have made on Home of My Own of WNY recently, as we continue to make headway with our project.

We have identified our Southtowns location in East Aurora, where we are working with developer Jim Cornell on a space located at 300 Gleed Ave.  Concept drawings are in the works, and we are meeting with the code enforcement officer and Village Board to present our project.  Our exploration with property in the Northtowns continues as we evaluate several options and continue to look for the best location.  On the top of our list for current exploration is the location at the Boulevard Mall being developed into a Town Center.

While we have not been able to plan our in-person fundraising activities due to Covid-19, we are looking for ways to continue to raise funds for Home of My Own. We have partnered with Embrace the Difference® as an approved charity for contributions from sales of their jewelry and are working on a custom bracelet exclusive to Home of My Own that will be ready for Mother’s Day.

Our Advisory Board has expanded with the most recent addition of Scott Gorski, who is heading up our Finance committee.  Scott brings a wealth of knowledge to our group in the area of Finance and IT, both from his practical experience as Director of Shared Services at Praxair Inc., as well as his previous Board experience. In addition, Kathryn Kartalis has joined our Marketing Committee and has already been working closely with Leah Marchewka on our social media outreach, as well as general help with marketing.

We also continue to research housing communities throughout the Country in order to network and explore with those that have created similar initiatives.  We are eager to learn from those that have a similar mission and can enhance our progress as we navigate the process of creating Home of My Own.  Symposiums, conferences, and similar learning opportunities related to housing for the IDD community are a regular part of our exploration as well.

While we are not yet at a point to submit grant proposals, we are continuing to engage in networking and communication with organizations who have expressed interest in our project and are a target for future grants.

We continue to promote our organization through social media, including regular posts to our Facebook Page and on our website.  We have created a virtual presentation that can be used to introduce people to Home of My Own, and offer an overview of our mission, vision, and values. Our presentation can be found HERE.

Thank you to those who have been on board with us from the start and those who have joined us along the way.  We are grateful for your energy, knowledge, and support!

Best,

Connie, Deb and Ellen
