Facts About Home of My Own of WNY and the Williamsville Location Property

While not an agency, Home of My Own of WNY is proud to serve as a landlord for this property. Our non-profit is focused on creating an inclusive community for peers to live independently together, but do not, and cannot, provide any staffing services to individual tenants or those in a group.

Independent Living with Personal Responsibility and Privacy

This community apartment complex is designed for adults who are ready for an independent living experience in their own apartment. There are no on-site staff members, front desk services, security personnel, or overnight supervision. Each apartment and all exterior entrances are secured with locks to help support residents’ privacy and safety.

Because this is an independent living setting, the expectation is that tenants (with support from family, their own staff, or a trusted advocate, if needed) are responsible for communicating directly with the property management company about their lease, rent, and any maintenance requests. This arrangement works best for individuals who are comfortable managing these responsibilities on their own or with assistance from their personal support network.

Three Buildings with Twelve Apartments

The Williamsville location is comprised of three (3) buildings with a total of 12 unfurnished apartments. Each apartment has two (2) bedrooms, but applicants are not required to have a roommate, nor will one be assigned to them. In addition to the two bedrooms, there is a kitchen, living room, small dining area and one bathroom.

There is coin laundry on the lower levels as well as a small storage space area for each apartment. We are currently in the early stages of renovations of a common space in each building on the lower levels for all tenants to enjoy.

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) & Neurotypical Tenants

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (I/DD) vs. Neurotypical Tenants – Home of My Own of WNY will allow both tenants with and without I/DD. Neurotypical individuals & others without a disability may occupy apartment(s) with or without a roommate with I/DD.

  • Some potential tenants with I/DD may benefit from a roommate who can serve as a live-in caregiver. This may include adult siblings, relatives, self-directed staff, etc.
  • Home of My Own of WNY apartments may be an ideal housing option for staff who work with the I/DD population.

Important Accessibility Considerations for Prospective Residents

Due to the original construction date of our buildings, the apartments are not required to be handicapped accessible or ADA compliant as they are “grandfathered in” to former compliance guidelines. Those with physical challenges need to be aware that there are no apartments on the ground floor and each level, including storage/laundry and common spaces, would require the use of stairs. There is no elevator. Our ultimate goal is to make future sites more accessible.
